Born in a Bamboo Grove, Bloom in Your Hands

A bamboo bag that is weaved with the flower-shaped mutsume ami method, which is considered the pinnacle of bambooworking. The craftsmanship that went into transforming bamboo into this bamboo bag will take your breath away.

Out of over 1250 types of bamboo in the world and over 600 in Japan, the material used is madake, the most traditional Japanese bamboo. Compared to other bamboos, madake is more sturdy and flexible, as well as having fewer joints; thus, it has been a valued material in bambooworking for many years.

The method utilized for this bag, mutusme ami, involves combining and weaving various sizes and colors of hexagonal plaitings. Using the beautiful and natural material that is madake, an artisan weaves each strip one by one to craft a beautiful three-dimensional model. The gentle and beautiful design will match any fashion you like.

Tamotsu Nishimoto

Tamotsu Nishimoto is a bambooworking artisan of Beppu City. In addition to practical bags used for daily life, he makes various bamboo items. While other traditional Japanese crafts require extensive facilities and tools, bambooworking only necessitates a single knife for splitting bamboos to fulfill the craft's requisite techniques. Nishimoto was drawn to the sustainable efficiency of collecting nearby bamboos and using a single cutting knife.

It is said that bambooworking is difficult when it comes to showcasing character,
but Nishimoto continues to dedicate himself to producing unique works so that users will know that he was the one who made them.
